Detailed Description

“If Echinacea is a soldier fighting to keep the body’s immune system healthy, then Colostrum is a complete army.”

Why take Colostrum?

Colostrum is nature’s most effective immune system booster. Take Colostrum if you want to:

  • Boost the immune system
    • Protect against colds, flu, ear, nose and chest infections
  • Heal and protect against gastrointestinal disorders including IBS, Colitis, Leaky Gut, diarrhoea and Crohn’s Disease.
  • Help heal wounds and minimise skin disorders
  • Improve energy levels
  • Increase concentration
  • Help control pain
  • Support the body in recovery from virus induced Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, ME, Fibromyalgia and Glandular Fever
  • Enhance fitness levels among athletes and speed up recovery

Colostrum contains 37 immune factors and a dozen growth factors that help repair skin, bones, muscle and connective tissue – see details below. Colostrum supplements help to slow down the ageing process; it keeps our bodies young and offers superb immune support. How? The ageing process begins when growth factors decline naturally. Colostrum supplements provide growth factors that allow body systems to continue to operate at a higher level than would be possible with the natural age induced decline of growth factors.

What causes people to get sick?

Children and adults are more susceptible to get sick when the stress levels are high, when seasons or daily rhythms change. The beginning of a school year is stressful for children and parents with a new teacher, new classmates, intense daily schedules, and close contact with lots of other children.  Some children seem to get sick easily and often while others remain unaffected by the most recent flare up of colds, flus or diarrhea.

A natural question to ask is: “why do some children (and their parents) get sick more often, and take longer to recover, than others?” We are surrounded by pathogens all year long. When a certain pathogen is present in a community, only 10-15 % of people who come in contact with the pathogen will become sick.

Two factors influence if a person gets sick, how severely sick they are, and how long the recovery takes:

  • the person’s immune system
  • the strength of the bacterium / virus (= pathogen) causing the illness.

People with a strong immune system remain healthy while those with a weaker immune system get sick. The strength of the pathogen is consistent.

If you or your child are getting sick too often, or take too long to recover from an illness, take Colostrum on a daily basis for a few months to help strengthen and support the immune system.

What does Colostrum do?

The composition of colostrum supports the development of a healthy immune system, in infants and in others who take the colostrum supplement. It is nature’s way to restore, strengthen and regulate immune function.

Bioactive factors found in bovine colostrum improve the absorption of nutrients in the gut, stimulate growth and defend the body against pathogens affecting the digestive system (=enteric pathogens). This group of bioactive factors includes immunoglobulins, growth factors, anti-inflammatory factors, and anti-microbial factors.

Immunoglobulins

Immunoglobulins constitute the largest group of immune components in colostrum. Five different Immunoglobulin varieties neutralize enteric pathogens, such as bacteria, microbes and viruses. Immunoglobulins in bovine colostrum are:

  • IgG; it provides immunity against invading enteric pathogens and comes in four forms; IgG1 makes up 85-90% of the total immunoglobulin content in colostrum
  • IgM is involved in eliminating enteric pathogens until sufficient amounts of IgG is present.
  • IgA protects the intestinal epithelium from enteric pathogens and toxins, and is found in the mucosa in the gastrointestinal, respiratory and urogenital tracts, as well as in saliva.

Growth factors

Bovine colostrum contains several different growth factors that control cell division and cell differentiation and promote growth and development, e.g.

  • insulin-like growth factors (IGFs); these heat and acid stable proteins withstand the degradative conditions of the gastrointestinal tract and promote cellular growth
  • epidermal growth factors (EGFs) stimulate production of epithelial cells and promote wound healing, especially in the gut. They are only minimally degraded by heat and gastric acid and maintain their biological activity until they reach the gut. The milk fat globule epidermal factors-8 (MFG-E8) have recently been reported to be significantly anti-inflammatory
  • transforming growth factors (TGFs) are anti-inflammatory and come in two types: (TGF-α and TGF-βs) TGF-α is a peptide involved in maintaining epithelial function and integrity in the gut; TGF-βs are important for the tissue repair and stimulation of restitution formation of bone and cartilage, and control of the immune system
  • platelet-derived growth factors (PGFs) trigger cell division in fibroblasts, the cells responsible for synthesizing the structural framework for tissue, and are thus important for wound healing
  • betacellulin and vascular endothelial growth factors promote formation of new blood vessels and cell division and thus participate in wound healing

Immune-regulating and anti-inflammatory factors

Bovine colostrum contains factors that belong to the innate and the adaptive immune system:

The innate immune system, the first line of defense, protects against enteric infectious pathogens by detecting and eliminating them through a complex interaction between cellular and molecular processes.

Components of bovine colostrum have been linked to the innate immune system:

  • Cytokines; small hormone-like proteins that are involved in cell signaling, pathogen recognition and immune cell recruitment in the immune system. They are the critical determinants of which types of immune cells that are needed to regulate and participate in both innate and adaptive immune responses. As such, they act both in local environments, but also in a systemic manner. Cytokines are directly antimicrobial and contribute to the control of infections and inflammations.
  • Bioactive oligosaccharides; they protect against pathogens and promote growth of beneficial bacteria flora in the gut lumen
  • Gangliosides are polar lipids found in the milk fat globule membrane and are involved in several biological procedures such as neural development, pathogen binding and activation of the immune system.
  • proteins
  • peptides
  • others

The adaptive immune system responds to threats to which it has previously been exposed. Immunoglobulins are the main component in the adaptive immune system. Trypsin inhibitor is a protease that protects IgGs and other bioactive proteins against degradation in the intestine.

Antimicrobial factors

Bovine colostrum contains spesific peptides and proteins, part of the innate immune system, that have been reported to be antibacterial, antifungal, or antiviral products.

Immunoglobulins are mainly responsible for antimicrobial activity of colostrum; other antimicrobial factors contained in colostrum are:

  • Lactoferrin and lactoperoxidase; two antibacterial immune factors belonging to the innate immune system.
    • Lactoferrin is a glycoprotein with iron-binding, lipopolysaccharide-binding, immune-modulating, antibacterial and growth-regulating effects.
    • Lactoperoxidase is an enzyme that inhibits bacterial metabolism and it is toxic to a range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
  • Lysozyme is an antibacterial enzyme, part of the innate immune system, that is toxic to Gram-negative bacteria causing cell death by lysis and to Gram-positive bacteria by inhibiting growth.
  • The presence of lactoferrin enhances the antibacterial activity of lysozyme against the bacteriaEscherichia coli.

Vitamins

Colostrum contains both water-soluble (B, and C) and fat-soluble (A, D, and E) vitamins. Vitamins are antioxidants that help to improve the immunity of different cell types.

  • The vitamin B complex supports energy production from nutrients and hormone synthesis
  • Vitamin C is essential for the production of collagen in the connective tissue
  • Vitamin A is especially important for growth, development, and immunity
  • Vitamin D promotes uptake of calcium and phosphorus in the gut and has immune-regulating activities.
  • Vitamin E is a group of compounds protecting the body cells from degradation

What is Colostrum?

Colostrum, the milk produced by mammals directly after birth, contains vitamins, minerals, fats, carbohydrates, disease-fighting proteins, growth hormones and digestive enzymes. Colostrum supplies newborns an intense immune boost after birth, to keep the newborn healthy on its entry into the world. Colostrum also supports the development of the newborn’s own immune system.

Colostrum supplements extracted from bovine colostrum (the milk produced by dairy cows directly after the birth of a calf) provide an array of natural health benefits to support the human immune system.

Immunecare Colostrum is guaranteed hormone, pesticide and antibiotic free. We source only ethically collected supplies – the calf is not deprived or harmed in any way. Our colostrum is not sourced from Fonterra.

What to other people say about Colostrum?

Susan Clark writes in her book ‘What Really Works in Natural Medicine’ that Colostrum is arguably nature’s most effective immune system booster, featured in …

Dr. Jacob E. Teitelbaum is an American physician and author with special interests in chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and pain management. Talking about his own struggles with Fibromyalgia when he was a young medical student at the 2001 Fibromyalgia Conference, he referred to Colostrum, how it helped him, and his patients who he subsequently prescribed it, in reducing its symptoms.
